Slack Huddles provide a voice only way of gathering up to 50 people together. People can come and go as they please without blocking themselves out from other incoming calls.
Starting a Huddle
In the bottom left corner of the Slack app you'll find a headphones symbol, next to the name of the channel/person you're about to start a Huddle with. Press the headphones.
Joining a Huddle
If someone starts a Huddle with you or a channel you are in, you'll see a Join and a Not Now option.
Even if you press Not Now, you can still go later to that channel and join the Huddle.
During the Huddle and Leaving the Huddle
During the Huddle you'll see the number of people involved and who is currently talking. You can press the microphone to mute yourself and can press the computer monitor icon to share your screen.
Press the Headphones on the blue switch to leave the Huddle. You can rejoin whilst it remains in progress.
Some Things of Note
- You can have up to 50 participants in a huddle.
- People can come and go as they like, including the person that started it.
- If you receive a normal voice or video call whilst you're in a huddle, then you can still accept it, unlike if you're on a full call.
- However, you can still hear the huddle (and they you) whilst you also hear the caller (and they hear you) so you either need to mute or leave the huddle manually.
- If you're in a huddle and start a call, you're automatically removed from the huddle.
- You can screen share in a huddle, just no video.
- And you can have Slack provide live captions. It's not perfect but gives a flavour of the conversation
